HEARING AIDS –TYPES AND FUNCTIONHEARING AIDS –TYPES AND FUNCTION

Just as in other types of modern technology there are many different designs of Hearing Aids. Each is designed for different price levels and functions. The latest wireless technology has revolutionised hearing aid design and performance. Previously, when someone used a hearing aid in both ears, they operated independently and did not function interactively – a bit like having an old record player with no volume control, before stereo came along.

Some hearing aid models have wireless communication capability so that they can share information. This means that they operate as one synchronised system as our ears normally do. Just as our ears normally work automatically and adapt to sounds in a synchronised way, so too do these highly technical inventions. They definitely have revolutionised hearing technology – and they are so small that most people do not When both aids work together it is easier for the wearer to hear in noise and tell where sounds are coming from. realise that someone is wearing them!

Wearers can use a remote control for program settings, to alter volumes or operating specifications for different environments. Even without the remote control the aids will adjust automatically to different sound environments. They also provide for high speed feedback cancellation (– no more screeching!), auto directional microphones, digital sound processing, and more.

Some hearing aids also use Bluetooth technology to enable the wearer to hear better on their mobile phone or while watching TV.

Types of Hearing Aids

CIC  ‘Completely in the Canal’
These are amongst the smallest devices and they hide right in the ear canal and are pretty much invisible.

ITC  ‘In the Canal’
Again, still quite small and very discreet this type offers good control functions and can be handled very easily.

ITE  ‘In the Ear’
This type is a little more noticeable, fitting into the area of the ear immediately outside the ear canal, providing a wide selection of functions.

BTE  ‘Behind the Ear’
This type fits snugly behind the ear and is attached to a custom made earpiece moulded to fit the shape of the outer ear just outside the ear canal. A fine tube runs between the two.

Open Fit BTE  ‘Behind the Ear’
The very fine tube running from the unit behind the ear has a speaker at the very end and this is simply located in the open ear canal close to the ear drum. These are very discreet pieces of technology.
