HEARING LOSS
Signs of Hearing Loss
“What did you say?”
“My partner says I have the TV too loud.”
“People mumble these days, they just don’t speak clearly.”
“I can hear OK, but I can’t always understand what they’re saying.”
“I can’t hear what’s said on the phone very well. Sometimes I can’t hear my mobile ringing.”
Symptoms
Do you agree with any of these statements?
- I find it’s difficult to understand conversations in a group, at parties, in restaurants, etc
- I have difficulty hearing some high pitched voices such as women’s and children’s, or birds singing, crickets chirping, etc
- I find it hard to understand conversations when there is background noise, such as traffic noise, aircraft overhead, power tools such as lawnmowers, electric drills, vacuum cleaners, etc
- I have difficulty hearing in concert halls, theatres, churches, etc where the sound source is quite distant.
- I find it hard to hear announcements over public address systems, at sports events, when I’m flying or on the ferry.
- I think some speech is unclear even though it is loud enough, but it seems to me that people mumble a lot.
- People who I have close contact with say the TV, radio or stereo is often turned up too loud.
- My partner often gets frustrated because they have to repeat things, and I get annoyed because they talk with their back to me or from another room.
- I get tired when I’m in groups and I have to look at other people’s lips to figure out what they’re saying & sometimes I’d rather not go out.
- I often have ringing or hissing in my ears although sometimes I forget it’s there.
- Sometimes I have to turn my head to one side while listening.
- I can’t hear everything that’s said in meetings I attend and have to guess what is said from the context.
